Counselling

There are a variety of ways in which counsellors think about their work. My approach is psychodynamic and I regard the counselling relationship as a collaborative effort with both parties working together to better understand the conflicts, motivations, desires and obstacles to living a satisfying life with good relationships.

Psychodynamic theory regards early life experiences as formative of the way we understand and relate to ourselves, other people and social situations. Psychodynamic counselling involves some exploration of early life experience and uses this to understand how the past relates to the present as a way of generating insight and self-awareness.

Counselling usually operates on a short-term basis, exploring a specific difficulty, and can be particularly helpful in managing changes and transitions in life.  Psychotherapy is usually longer-term and is more expansive in scope. It works at greater depth on long-standing difficulties and develops understanding and insight.  I work on a short or long term basis depending on what feels appropriate for you.

As well as working with individuals, I also work with couples who are experiencing relationship difficulties. Relationship counselling can help identify particular tensions, and by understanding how these have come about, work towards improving the relationship.
